5-3-09: Haiku/Oulipo
I should not have been willing to further procrastinate by pondering films. But I was watching Wendy & Lucy and Old Joy, hearing the soundtrack, listening, pouring over the images. Both films were comfortable, like hearing stories from old friends: profound, pliable, and porous. These were movies of outside lives; rapport was quickly gained through each narrative. Despite my enjoyment of the films, I had to get busy: I was surrounded by to do lists and potential video subjects. I began to drink caffeine to get myself wound up, or I was liable to fall asleep, another all-nighter, poor me.***
The video today was to be a haiku. I followed the syllable prescription for the poetic form by interpreting each shot as a syllable. The black screen serves as a separation between lines.
The writing obstruction was to include the letter combinations ou, li, po in that order, but not necessarily consecutively, in each sentence. This is a tribute to Oulipo, a group of mainly French writers who use constraints to focus their writing. This project was partially inspired by this group.

1 May 2009: Orange, not blue, or yellow unless; Airiness

I must have been daydreaming (in spite of the hour); I wasn’t sure how long I had been at my doorstep, keys in hand. I did remember getting off the bus, or did I just assume that. I leave work, I get on the bus, I get off the bus, I walk home: Right? There was a density to my shift at work, having not slept. I would have to make a pot of coffee. Maybe I walked all the way from work. But, probably not. There weren’t any stars that night: it must have been cloudy.

I used today's parameter to gather my favorite types of images, lines. This video was shot in spaces on campus at night that I could spend hours in. The inclusion of my voice tonight is perhaps a homage to experimental filmmaker, Brian Gallagher, whose work I've been immersed in for the past few weeks.
For the writing, I could only use single words, a shopping list, perhaps. And, well, this is only 100 words of an eight hour shift at a convenience store. Yes, some of the brands are two words, but in some cases it is the name of the family brand and then a specific product (some of these are separated), but the rest are the trademarked name of the brand or product and I viewed as inseparable, a single word.
Post Script
I apologize for falling behind. I will get the other video/texts edited and posted tomorrow and be back on top of everything come Monday. I appreciate your patience.
